E.ON Next, a subsidiary of German energy firm E.ON SE, has been chosen to take on the energy supply for 233,000 customers from three companies in the U.K. that collapsed after the recent surge in wholesale energy prices, industry watchdog Ofgem said Monday.

Independent suppliers Enstroga, Igloo Energy Supply Ltd. and Symbio Energy ceased operating in September as some companies have been unable to cover the cost of purchasing the energy they need to supply their customers amid a global shortage of natural gas.

Customers were switched over to E.ON Next on Sunday, Ofgem said. The award followed a competitive process, the regulator said.

Igloo supplied gas and electricity to around 179,000 residential customers, Symbio served 48,000 households and a small number of nondomestic customers, and Enstroga had around 6,000 domestic clients, Ofgem said.

Funds that current and former domestic customers of the three companies have paid into their accounts will be protected, where they are in credit, Ofgem said.

Customers of all three suppliers will be contacted over the coming days about the changes, the watchdog said.
