Passenger-car registrations in the European Union fell strongly
in August, as EU markets showed a weak performance during the
summer amid a semiconductor shortage.
New car registrations--a reflection of sales--declined 19% on
year to 622,993 vehicles in August, the European Automobile
Manufacturers Association said Thursday. The EU's major
markets--Spain, France, Italy and Germany--all reported strong
decreases.
One month earlier, in July, car registrations across the EU fell
23% year-on-year to 823,949 vehicles, said the organization, also
known as ACEA.
However, new registrations in the first eight months of the year
rose 11% to 6.8 million passenger cars.
"Despite the weak performance of EU markets during the summer
months, substantial gains earlier in the year kept cumulative
growth in positive territory," said ACEA.
