SAINT-GOBAIN COMMITS TO NET-ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2050
Today in New York City, as part of the Climate Action Summit
conveyed by the General Secretary of the United Nations,
Saint-Gobain signs the pledge of the Global Compact "Business
ambition for 1.5degC", committing itself to reach net-zero
emissions by no later than 2050 in line with 1.5degC scenarios,
responding to what the latest climate science indicates is needed
to limit the worst impacts of climate change.
Saint-Gobain has responded to a call-to-action, issued by a
broad coalition of business, civil society and UN leaders, to make
its contribution to keeping global temperature increase within
1.5degC above pre-industrial levels.
Saint-Gobain will now work on interim targets and steps taking
into account the specificities of its processes and its investment
cycles.
"Saint-Gobain designs, produces and distributes solutions that
contribute themselves to the reduction of CO(2) emissions,
including thermal insulation solutions that promote energy
efficiency. Within only three months, thanks to energy savings, our
insulation solutions compensate the CO(2) emissions linked to their
production. The Group is already making a significant contribution
to improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions on its
construction, mobility and industry markets. With this commitment,
Saint-Gobain goes one step further to reduce its own impact. The
2050 vision is critical to drive our medium and long-term
investment policy as well as industrial roadmaps, R&D programs,
or product development strategy", says Pierre-André de Chalendar,
Chairman and CEO of Saint-Gobain.
Saint-Gobain is already committed to reducing its CO(2)
emissions by 20% between 2010 and 2025. Various programs and tools
have also already been implemented in order to support this target,
like for instance an internal price of carbon, one for investments
and one for R&D projects, to drive business decisions towards
low-carbon solutions.
Saint-Gobain is also one of 127 companies globally to be
included in the 2018 "Climate Change A List" established by the
global organization CDP. Its environmental objectives for 2025 have
been validated by the Science-based Targets initiative.
