Clorox Co. (CLX) on Wednesday said it inked a virtual power-purchase agreement that will accelerate its use of 100% renewable electricity in the U.S. and Canada to 2021, four years ahead of its original plan.

The Oakland consumer-products company said it signed the 12-year, 70-megawatt agreement with Enel SpA's (ENEL.MI) Enel Green Power North America unit for the purchase of renewable energy beginning in 2021.

Clorox said the agreement is part of the second phase of Enel's 497-megawatt Roadrunner solar project in Upton County, Texas.

Enel in June said it signed a 12-year power-purchase agreement with food and beverage company Mondelez International Inc. (MDLZ) covering a 65-megawatt portion of the Roadrunner project.

Clorox said the Enel agreement represents roughly half of its 100% renewable electricity goal in the U.S. and Canada.
