PCI-PAL PLC shares rose Tuesday after it said it has been given grant approval for a patent in the U.S. for the key processes used in its global secure-payment platform, PCI Pal.

Shares at 0827 GMT were up 9.0 pence, or 16%, at 64.5 pence.

The payment-card data-protection company said the patent covers PCI Pal Agent Assist deployment methods and, in particular, covers its core innovation that allows its Agent Assist product to interact with phone calls in a noninvasive way.

The company said this was the first in a number of pending patents around the world to achieve grant-approval status.

During the application process, along with the U.S. Patent Office's own prior reviews, PCI-PAL has referred a number of competitor patents to the patent office for review, including all U.S. patents owned by Semafone Ltd., PCI-PAL said.

Semafone filed a lawsuit in September against PCI-PAL over alleged patent infringement. PCI-PAL said in November it had filed its U.K. defense and counterclaim, and applied to a U.S. court to invalidate a patent.
