12:20 p.m. ET -- Amazon.com Inc. is one of the most talked about companies in the U.S. across all news items in the last 12 hours, according to Factiva data. Layoffs at the Seattle-based giant will now total more than 18,000 employees, mostly concentrated in retail and recruiting operations. "Amazon has weathered uncertain and difficult economies in the past, and we will continue to do so," CEO Andy Jassy said. The company will alert affected employees later this month. Amazon's layoffs represent the highest number of people let go by a tech firm in the past few months, according to tallies released on Layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks media reports and company releases.
