Electricite de France SA and General Electric Co. said Wednesday that they are in preliminary discussions over a transaction involving GE's nuclear activities, but that no outcome is certain.

French media last month reported that EDF was set to make a bid for GE's nuclear activities, grouped under GE Steam Power and located principally in Belfort in eastern France.

The French utility said it continually assesses its strategic options and that its U.S. peer is a key partner in the nuclear business.

"EDF is currently analyzing conditions under which the interests of the EDF Group would be best served," the company said, adding that the outcome of the discussions isn't certain.

A spokesperson for GE confirmed the talks relating to part of GE Steam Power, adding that the company won't comment further until matters reach a stage where engagement with employees or employee representatives become appropriate.
