SYDNEY--BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP.AU) said former chief executive Charles "Chip" Goodyear will become chairman of BHP Foundation, a charity funded by the world's largest miner by market value.

Mr. Goodyear, who was CEO of the mining company from 2003 to 2007, will join the BHP Foundation board as a director from Sep. 4 and become chairman on Feb. 1., 2019, said BHP.

The foundation was established in 2013, replacing the U.K. Charitable Trust BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities, and runs programs to address issues tied to the natural resources sector including corruption and education.

Current chairman Karen Wood will step down and remain a director, said BHP.
