Eni SpA (ENI.MI) said Monday that it has signed a partnership agreement with Maire Tecnimont's green chemistry subsidiary, NextChem, to develop and implement a technology that turns waste into hydrogen and methanol.

The Italian energy company said the technology could be implemented at its industrial sites in Italy.

The conversion technology uses high-temperature gasification to turn solid urban waste and non-recyclable plastic into hydrogen and methanol, Eni said.

"This partnership will see Eni acquire highly innovative technology," said Giuseppe Ricci, Eni's chief refining and marketing officer.

Financial details weren't disclosed.
