Twitter Inc. is banning political advertising from its platform.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey explained he believes political messages should be "earned, not bought."

"This isn't about free expression. This is about paying for reach," Mr. Dorsey said in a tweet from his personal account. "Paying to increase the reach of political speech has significant ramifications that today's democratic infrastructure may not be prepared to handle. It's worth stepping back in order to address."

Twitter's decision comes as social-media companies, particularly Facebook Inc., have faced scrutiny for running political ads that contain misinformation.

Shares in Twitter fell 3% in after-hours trading on the announcement.
