Intesa Sanpaolo SpA said Sunday that it has decided to close branches across 11 towns in northern Italy after the authorities imposed a quarantine on more than 50,000 people.

The announcement comes after as Italian authorities struggled to explain how Italy went from having just three cases of novel coronavirus to becoming Europe's biggest outbreak hotspot in just a few days with more than 150 people testing positive for Corvid-19. The abrupt spike in the number of reported cases prompted officials to cancel trade shows, soccer matches and other public events, and close schools.

The Italian bank said it closed branches in Codogno, Castiglione d'Adda, Casalpusterlengo, Fombio, Maleo, Somaglia, Bertonico, Terranova dei Passerini, Castelgerundo and San Fiorano in Lombardy as well as Vo Euganea in the Veneto region.
