Intesa Sanpaolo SpA said late on Friday that two Lombardy-based employees tested positive for the coronavirus.

The two employees are based in Sesto San Giovanni and Lodi, in Italy's Lombardy region, and are currently away from work, the Italian bank said.

The Sesto San Giovanni employee doesn't work in contact with members of the public, Intesa said, while the bank's branch in Lodi's Via Volturno has been closed for deep-cleaning.

All colleagues who have been in contact with the two infected employees were directed to isolate in their own homes, the bank said.

Intesa is the latest Italian lender to confirm infection cases of novel coronavirus among its workforce, after UniCredit SpA also said Friday that a Milan-based employee tested positive.

Intesa said Feb. 23 that it decided to close branches across 11 towns in northern Italy after authorities imposed a quarantine on more than 50,000 people.

Italy went from having just three cases of novel coronavirus to becoming Europe's biggest outbreak hotspot in just a few days.
