National Grid PLC said Wednesday that it is partnering with
Northern Gas Networks and Fluxys Belgium S.A. to build a hydrogen
test facility in the U.K.
The FTSE 100 energy company said the 10-million-pound ($13.1
million) project will be built from a range of decommissioned
assets at DNV GL's facility in Cumbria, northwest England. The goal
is to create a representative offline network and see how hydrogen
gas can be used to heat homes and deliver green energy to the
industry.
"If we truly want to reach a net zero decarbonized future, we
need to replace methane with green alternatives like hydrogen.
Sectors such as heat are difficult to decarbonize, and the
importance of the gas networks to the U.K.'s current energy supply
means trial projects like this are crucial if we are to deliver low
carbon energy, reliably and safely to all consumers," said Antony
Green, hydrogen project director at National Grid.
Construction will begin in 2021 and tests are expected to start
in 2022.
