Mediaset SpA said Thursday that it might consider new business opportunities in the telecommunications sector "if there were to be the possibility for convergence" for players in telecommunications and broadcasting.

The Italian broadcasting company said any potential assessment of such opportunities could start from recent developments in Italy for the creation of a single nationwide fixed network.

Mediaset also said it took notice of a ruling from the Court of Justice of the European Union that a provision of Italian law preventing French media company Vivendi SA from acquiring 28% of Mediaset's capital is contrary to EU law.

"The sentence contains issues that will need to be examined in subsequent phases before a competent national judge to whom we are confident the Italian Communications Authority will provide all the necessary clarifications," Mediaset said in a statement.

Vivendi said it welcomed the ruling, and that it "has always acted in strict compliance with Italian law."

At 1413 GMT, Mediaset shares were trading 7.4% higher at EUR1.62.
