The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said Friday that Instagram has committed to make a series of changes to tackle hidden advertising on its platform, following action from the regulator.

The antitrust regulator said it has been investigating hidden advertising on Instagram over concerns too many social media influencers were posting ads on its platform without labeling them as such, and that the company wasn't doing enough to address the problem.

Facebook Ireland Ltd., which operates Instagram in the U.K., has committed to prompt users to confirm if they have been incentivized in any way to promote a product or service and require them to disclose it clearly if so, the CMA said. The company will also extend to all users a tool that enables them to display a clear label at the top of a post, and use technology and algorithms to spot when users might not have disclosed clearly that their post is an ad, the regulator said.
