UniCredit SpA said Wednesday that it has appointed Ranieri de Marchis as general manager ad interim with all the powers attributed to the chief executive until the official appointment of a new CEO.

The Italian bank said Mr. de Marchis will retain his current position as co-chief operating officer. Jean Pierre Mustier will step down as CEO and general manager with effect from Feb. 11.

UniCredit previously said it nominated European banker Andrea Orcel to lead the company. His candidacy is subject to approval at the upcoming shareholders' meeting on April 15.
