Amazon.com Inc. on Tuesday unveiled plans to hire 125,000 fulfillment and transportation workers at an average starting wage of more than $18 an hour as the online retail giant works to beef up its delivery network amid a tight labor market.

Amazon said it will offer sign-on bonuses of up to $3,000 and a starting hourly rate of up to $22.50 in some locations.

Amazon's base minimum wage is $15 an hour.

The Seattle company earlier this month said it was looking to fill more than 40,000 corporate and technology roles, and the company last week offered to pay college tuition for more than 750,000 U.S. employees amid an escalating battle for hourly workers.

Amazon, which has hired more than 450,000 U.S. workers since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, said it has already opened more than 250 new fulfillment centers, sortation centers, regional air hubs, and delivery stations in the U.S. this year, with more than 100 more buildings slated to open this month.
