Photon Kathaas Productions

Production update

Chennai, 28 January 2011. Photon Kathaas Productions Ltd. (AIM: PKP, "PKP"), the South Indian film company, announces an operational update on its current production slate and associated marketing activities during the key South Indian holiday period.

Two films, Nadunisi Naigal and Veppam, have been completed and are ready for release in February and April respectively. A third film Azhagar Samiyin Kuthurai is nearing completion and expected to be released in April. Three other films are in pre-production with anticipated release dates in June and July.

Venkat Somasundaram, PKP Chief Executive said:

"We are delighted with the progress made with our production slate and with the enthusiastic response of South Indian audiences to the trailers and soundtracks of our first two releases.

"Having established South India's first studio-led film company and more recently launched our own music label, PKP is ideally positioned to capitalise on the growth of the South Indian film industry and to capture opportunities at multiple points across the entire value chain from the box office to music rights and merchandising."

Nadunisi Naigal(Midnight Dogs) is a small budget Tamil film directed by PKP's Chief Creative Officer Gautham Vasudev Menon. The film, which is a Hollywood style psychological thriller, has been co-produced by PKP with R.S. Infotainment and Escape Artistes.

Sales and marketing activity for Nadunisi Naigal is well advanced with the promotional trailer launched on 31 December 2010 in conjunction with the audio release of Veppam (see below). This has been followed up with a marketing campaign including the screening of the trailer at nearly 150 screens across Tamil Nadu and visits to key theatres by the cast and crew. The film is planned for release on 11 February 2011.

Veppam is a small budget Tamil film directed by Anjana Ali Khan a protege of Gautham, who is making her directorial debut with this action thriller. The film is being produced by the same team of PKP, R.S. Infotainment and Escape Artistes and release is currently slated for the first week of April.

In advance of the release of Veppam, PKP has invested in major promotional campaign which included the launch of an official trailer, soundtrack and a music video (directed by Gautham) on the 31 December 2010. This was followed up with a preview of the music video being shown at leading multiplexes in Chennai during the Tamil holiday week of 14-21 January 2011.

Music is a major ingredient in Indian film productions and the soundtrack for Veppam, composed by Joshua Sridhar, is being distributed by PKP's own recently launched music label Photon Kathaas Music in association with Sony Music. PKP has launched a campaign to promote both the soundtrack and the movie, including screening of the trailer and audio promos across theatres, radio campaigns, and appearances by the cast and musicians at leading music stores and joint promotion along with Nadunisi Naigal.

Films currently in production include Azhagar Samiyin Kuthirai and a Hindi remake of Vinnai Thandi Varuvaaya. The latter is a Tamil romantic drama directed and written by Gautham Menon with music soundtrack composed by PKP's Creative Adviser A. R. Rahman.

The film was one of Gautham's first bilingual films, simultaneously shot and released in both Tamil and Telugu (the latter as Ye Maaya Chesave) with different climax and different cast. Having been a blockbuster hit in 2010, the film is now being remade in Hindi for north Indian audiences. Pre-production has now been completed and three songs have been composed by A.R. Rahman. Fully-fledged production will commence from 4 April 2011 and the film is expected to be released in June/July 2011.
