Anheuser-Busch's Houston Brewery to Utilize Biogas from Allied
Waste Landfill HOUSTON, July 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Allied
Waste Industries, Inc. (NYSE:AW) has entered into an agreement with
Ameresco McCarty Energy to sell biogas from Allied Waste's McCarty
Road Landfill, for use at Anheuser-Busch's Houston brewery. The
biogas is naturally produced through waste decomposition at the
landfill. Currently, a portion of the biogas from the McCarty Road
Landfill is captured, processed and sold to a local utility, while
the excess is flared (burned without energy recovery). Ameresco
plans to capture some of that unused biogas and transport it to the
Anheuser-Busch brewery through a six-mile underground pipeline.
Gary McCuistion, Director, Infrastructure Development for the South
Region, said, "This important landfill gas-to-energy project will
use a renewable resource to the benefit of Anheuser-Busch and,
ultimately, the environment. Beyond the environmental benefits, the
local community will also gain financially, as Allied will
contribute a portion of project revenues to area causes. With the
help and input of Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee, we will
jointly establish a non-profit organization to distribute the
estimated $200,000 or more of annual funding. The non-profit's
volunteer board will identify worthwhile causes in communities
around the landfill." "We routinely evaluate innovative energy
technologies to help support our operations and reduce our reliance
on fossil fuels," said Steve Ghiglieri, Senior Plant Manager of
Anheuser-Busch's Houston brewery. "When combining the fuel we
collect from the landfill with the existing biogas collected
through the brewery's Bio-Energy Recovery System (BERS) operation,
we anticipate more than 70 percent of the fuel we use will be
produced from non-fossil fuel alternative sources." Anheuser-Busch
is the world's largest operator of BERS, and it provides up to 15
percent of Anheuser-Busch's fuel needs at the breweries where these
systems operate. Enough gas to heat more than 25,000 homes. Allied
Waste contracted with Ameresco in 2005 to put the excess biogas
produced by the McCarty Road Landfill to beneficial use.
Construction of the pipeline is underway. When completed and
operational later this year, the pipeline will provide biogas to
help generate steam energy for the Houston brewery's power plant.
"Ameresco is proud to be part of such a forward looking project
that has tremendous societal benefits," said Michael T. Bakas, Vice
President of Ameresco. "In addition, we are excited to have the
opportunity to work with Anheuser-Busch and Allied Waste, whose
vision and passion for positively impacting our environment are
aligned with Ameresco's." Allied Waste is a leader in advancing
landfill gas-to-energy solutions as a renewable energy resource.
The company currently has 57 landfill gas-to-energy projects
operating at its landfills, including 44 electric-generation
plants. The emission reductions achieved by Allied Waste's current
projects nationwide is equal to removing approximately 2.8 million
vehicles from the road each year, providing heat/power to
approximately 280,000 homes, or the carbon sequestration capability
of 3.5 million acres of pine or fir forests. In addition, the
company has more than a dozen projects in permitting or under
construction. Allied Waste in Houston Since 1972, the McCarty Road
