Traffic.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRFC), the leading provider of personalized traffic information for drivers coast to coast, has been selected by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) to provide digital traffic services for the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh metropolitan areas. Through this $3.3 million agreement, Traffic.com will construct a network of digital roadside sensors along 84 miles of the Turnpike, collect and process real-time traffic data for those portions, and share that data with the PTC and its drivers. Near Philadelphia, Traffic.com's Turnpike coverage will span from Downingtown (Exit #312) to the Delaware River Bridge (Exit #359) and up the Northeast Extension to Lansdale (Exit #31). Near Pittsburgh, coverage spans from Cranberry (Exit #28) to Pittsburgh (Exit #57). The sensors will be fully deployed within 18 months. Traffic.com will deliver vital traffic information such as incident and accident reports, vehicle speeds, congestion levels, and travel times to the PTC. The PTC will use this real-time and archived data to help improve work zone safety, emergency response, and highway operations. "The Pennsylvania Turnpike sees nearly 190 million vehicles per year," said Joseph G. Brimmeier, chief executive officer, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. "Innovative solutions, like traffic flow detection, provides real-time traffic data which is essential to the safe and efficient operation of our highway system." Through the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure Program (ITIP) created under TEA-21, Traffic.com entered into a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) in 1999 and deployed hundreds of miles of roadside traffic sensors in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. The addition of the Pennsylvania Turnpike sensors significantly enhances coverage of these two cities, greatly benefiting local drivers and the government agencies. Also through FHWA programs, Traffic.com has pre-existing, similar agreements with 19 local and state agencies across the country including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington, DC. The Turnpike agreement is precedent-setting because it is the Company's first traffic data services agreement with a government agency that provides coverage above and beyond the Federal legislation. "The agreement with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is evolutionary in nature and serves as a model for other government agencies," said David L. Jannetta, president, Traffic.com. "Government agencies across the country can take advantage of state-of-the-art technology and real-time traffic data to provide better, more efficient traffic services to the public - without having to await Federal legislation specifically for their metropolitan area." Turnpike drivers can also access traffic information via Traffic.com's free, personalized service options, which include phone, Web, mobile and on-demand reports and alerts. These alerts offer free, real-time, customized traffic information to drivers-when, where and as often as they need it.
