IP Video Gateways to Facilitate Perfect-Quality, Real-Time Video
Transport SAN DIEGO, May 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Path 1 Network
Technologies Inc. (AMEX:PNO), a leading provider of IP video
gateway products that enable the transmission of broadcast-quality
video over IP networks, announced today that Texas A&M
University (TAMU) has selected Path 1's IP video gateways to
deliver real-time distance learning video applications between
campuses in the U.S. and Qatar in high definition TV (HDTV). Path 1
was selected after rigorous testing that included the transport of
HDTV content over a hybrid terrestrial/wireless IP network. At the
core of Path 1's IP video gateway is its ClearPath forward error
correction (FEC) technology, which played a key role in enabling
the hybrid IP network's successful delivery of 14 Mbps of
high-quality HDTV content during the evaluation period.
Traditionally, the distance learning market has been served by
organizations using satellite and microwave delivery methods. With
significant advancements in delivering high-quality video over IP,
coupled with the ongoing investments being made to interconnect
educational facilities with high speed internet connections, IP
video transport is beginning to displace other methods given IP
networks cost-effectiveness, and reliability. The target markets
for distance learning applications include education (K-12 and
universities), corporate (financial institutions, automotive
companies, health care) and government. According to industry
analysts, the distance learning marketplace spent over $8 billion
in 2005. "Path 1's ClearPath FEC enabled us to achieve these
fantastic results," said Rod Zent, Executive Director, Broadcast
Services at TAMU. "Path 1 flawlessly delivered a 14 Mbps HDTV feed
down the same IP network where we unsuccessfully tried to transport
a 256 Kbps H.323 unprotected video feed. Based upon this successful
demonstration, we are planning to expand our existing SDTV
distance-learning network between College Station, TX and Doha,
Qatar to include HDTV programming content and are also in
discussions to expand the capability for PBS stations in Texas to
share HDTV content." About Path 1's IP Video Gateways Path 1 offers
two IP video gateways with its ClearPath family of forward error
correction technologies designed to successfully correct for the
levels of impairment found in both private and public networks.
Path 1's Cx1020 IP Video Gateway with ClearPath FEC is capable of
handling ASI and 270 Mbps SDI/SDTI video. The Cx1020 is also
available with Path 1's RepliCaster(TM) stream replication
technology, which is ideal for point-to-multi-point video transport
over IP/MPLS networks. Path 1's Vx8000 combines support for
Pro-MPEG COP #3 FEC with ClearPath Pro, a set of Path 1 extensions
to the COP #3 standard that enables a 60x increase in error
recovery performance. Both forms of FEC are included in the Vx8000
gateway and are user-selectable based on the appropriate network
environment. As a result, the Vx8000 can overcome the types of
losses/outages that routinely occur over any type of IP network,
including the Public Internet. Both the Vx8000 and Cx1020 enable
broadcasters to deliver real-time, broadcast-quality MPEG-2, MPEG-4
and VC-1 (MPEG-2 TS) video in Standard (SD) and High Definition
(HD) formats. "Once again, Path 1's technology has demonstrated an
ease of use and robustness that operators rely upon," said Rick
Segil, VP Marketing at Path 1. "Even high-capacity IP networks,
such as the Internet 2, when coupled with wireless environments
present numerous challenges for transporting video in real-time.
Our ClearPath FEC technology is specifically designed to address
those issues and make the delivery of perfect video -- down any
type of IP network -- a viable option." About Path 1 Network
