The Board of Charter European Trust plc notes the recent announcement by Midas Investment Management Limited ("Midas") in which Midas confirms that it has requisitioned an extraordinary general meeting to vary the voting arrangements under the Alliance Trust Savings Scheme ("ATS Scheme"). The Board has been focusing its efforts on reviewing options available to the Company and its shareholders going forward. As part of this process, the Board has tried to engage Midas in discussions about the proposals. However, Midas has refused to engage and has instead focussed its attention on the ATS Scheme voting arrangements.

The Board will make a further announcement later this week which will include details of the proposals for the Company's future and, in the meantime, will continue both to encourage Midas to engage in the discussions about the Company's future and to take into account the interests of all the Company's shareholders, in the hope to achieve the best possible outcome for all.
