In honor of its twentieth anniversary, Genesys Conferencing (Euronext Eurolist:FR0004270270) (NASDAQ:GNSY), a global multimedia conferencing leader, is researching how the "world of work" has changed since the company's inception in 1986. Technological changes in particular have affected all aspects of the way people work, including physical work habits, modes of communication, thought processes, and interpersonal relations. "Over the next year we will be examining how people work and releasing our findings," said Denise Persson, Genesys Conferencing executive vice president of global marketing. "The first area we've researched is the physical workplace itself." The physical "world of work" today is much different than it was in 1986 In 1986, the Oxford Dictionary "word of the year" was "mobile" -- signifying the emergence of a new concept that 20 years later actually characterizes the work habits of most workers. Today many workers find themselves physically present with their colleagues less and less. A recent poll of 5,000 Genesys customers revealed that 73% of the respondents believe that multimedia conferencing saves time and is more convenient than having to attend meetings in person. Nearly half, or 46%, of the respondents said that the business environment has developed a higher acceptance of Web conferencing as a viable alternative to physical meetings. The popularity of meeting virtually cannot be attributed solely to technological innovations that make virtual meetings just as effective as those conducted in person, however. According to nearly one quarter, or 24%, of the participants in another recent Genesys customer survey, reduced driving due to rising gas prices is responsible for an increase in virtual meetings. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1986 was 80 cents. Today, drivers must spend over $3.00 per gallon,(1) and the cost is rising steadily. "In 2006, the benefits of virtual meetings, such as enhanced communication and collaboration, are well recognized," said Persson. "Genesys Conferencing has been helping people work together more efficiently since 1986, and we are thrilled to be celebrating 20 successful years of connecting the world."
