SANTA ANA, Calif. and ISMANING, Germany, Oct. 1
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SCM Microsystems, Inc.
(NASDAQ:SCMMNASDAQ:PrimeNASDAQ:Standard:NASDAQ:SMY), a leading
provider of solutions for secure access, secure identity and secure
exchange, announced today that it has shipped more than 200,000
smart card readers to support a Spanish eGovernment and eID
project. SCM's SCR3310v2.0 smart card readers will be used to
enable various eGovernment applications under an electronic ID Card
(DNI electronico) project in Spain. Individuals and businesses will
be able to use the reader to access eGovernment, eBanking and
eAdministration applications, as well as to digitally sign
documents. SCM Microsystems received the order from red.es - an
entity within the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade
responsible for driving the Information Society in Spain and for
carrying out strategic projects - via its partner Algoritmos
Procesos y Disenos, S.A. (APD). The Spanish government is providing
the readers to its citizens at no charge, to drive the distribution
and use of the electronic ID card and the respective technologies
in Spain. Several Spanish business sponsors are supporting the
government project. "We are pleased that our SCR3310v2.0 readers
are being used to provide support for the Spanish government. One
important criteria for the selection besides our well-known product
quality is our ability to provide the customized readers in a very
tight time frame. Our long experience with large scale government
projects together with our flexibility to meet customer
requirements makes us a preferred partner for such projects," said
Felix Marx, chief executive officer of SCM Microsystems. "The DNI
electronico project offers substantial advantages to citizens as
well as companies: online forms for government services can be
filed and processed faster, and eBanking applications can be
conveniently executed." Background: DNI electronico Since 2006, 14
million electronic ID Cards have been issued to Spanish citizens.
However, users have been slow to utilize the various functions that
the cards enable. The goal of the Spanish government's DNI
electronico is to overcome this hesitancy and help both citizens
and the government experience the full benefits of the national ID
scheme. Distribution of the new readers will begin October 1, 2009.
