Voyant International Corporation (OTCBB: VOYT), a diversified media and technology holding company dedicated to improving the quality of the digital world for businesses and consumers, celebrated the dawn of a new era in wireless communications. Today marks the deadline set by the FCC for the end of analog television broadcast, freeing up valuable wireless spectrum for innovative new uses.

While broadcast television viewers will now benefit from higher quality, digital signals, the wireless frequencies corresponding to unused television channels are now also being made available for novel wireless services. Voyant is a pioneer in the development of the white space radios (WSRs) that are expected to enable these new services.

One potential application for WSR includes wireless broadband access for underserved communities as envisioned in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This and other broadband applications have sometimes been referred to as "WiFi 2.0" because of their potential to surpass traditional wireless Internet access methods. Other potential uses of WSR include machine-to-machine (M2M) networks, mobile social network applications and supervisory, control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks.

Unlike traditional licensed spectra, use of the white space spectrum does not require an FCC license. Consequently, creative and dynamic companies can harness these frequencies to deliver new, previously unforeseen services without a large cost barrier to adoption. This has the potential to spur a revolution in the wireless industry while also stimulating the nation's economy.

"Voyant began development of WSRs when it received a $2 million order in May 2008," said Ed Gerhardt, Voyant's general manager of wireless systems. "We are therefore well positioned to serve this entire new industry with the fundamental radio technologies that will be required."

The IEEE is developing standards to facilitate interoperability and co-existence between different WSRs. "Voyant is a strong supporter of, and contributor to, this standards work," added Gerhardt. "Voyant also has the in-house expertise necessary to design radios that will comply with these evolving standards and with the FCC's stringent requirements not to interfere with incumbent users of this spectrum."
