Project includes the addition of 66 affordable units and transformation of the historic Harris Elementary School into a community resource center

Rocky Mountain Community Reinvestment Corporation (RMCRC), a leading nonprofit dedicated to fostering affordable housing across the Rocky Mountain region, announced the funding of the Harris Community Village in Tooele, Utah. Developed in partnership with the Tooele County Housing Authority, Switchpoint, and Giv Communities, this new project will provide 66 units of permanent supportive housing for individuals earning 35% or less of the area median income (AMI) and a 44-bed shelter for individuals and families. This project supports the Tooele County Housing Authority in its mission of enhancing the availability of quality, affordable housing.

“Harris Community Village is a much-needed resource in our community and will provide important services to those in need for many years to come. We value the partnerships and collaboration that took place to create this amazing facility,” DeAnn Christiansen, executive director of Tooele County Housing Authority, said. “We are honored to be part of such an important endeavor to help individuals and families work their way out of poverty. We see Harris Community Village as a ‘homeless prevention facility’ and appreciate all who have funded, donated, and partnered with us to get us to the finish line.”

The successful execution of this multifaceted project has been facilitated by the collaborative efforts of Tooele County Housing Authority, owner and developer; Giv Communities, developer; Switchpoint, developer, service provider, and operator of the community resource center; Utah Housing Corporation, the issuer of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credits; and the Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund, contributing subordinate lending. These partnerships demonstrate a shared commitment to ending homelessness and addressing the scarcity of affordable housing.

“Our goal with this project is to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports our residents comprehensively,” said Carol Hollowell, executive director of Switchpoint. “RMCRC is the permanent lender for this unique project that integrates housing solutions with essential services, not just providing a place to live but setting a foundation for transformative community impact. RMCRC’s contribution to the project has been one of the critical pieces to making our vision a reality.”

A comprehensive range of services will be provided by Switchpoint and are designed to address the immediate needs of the community while creating long-term stability. Additional amenities provided at the community resource center include an around-the-clock childcare center and emergency food pantry stocked to meet the nutritional needs of residents in crisis.

“This new multifamily housing project and community resource center symbolize a major leap forward in our mission to increase and preserve safe, clean, affordable housing,” said Christopher Jensen, president and CEO of RMCRC. “Through community collaboration and innovative approaches, we’re addressing the urgent social challenges that face our community today.”
