Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA on Wednesday reported
the shutdown of equipment which led to above-normal gas
emissions-flaring at its refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.
"An unanticipated shutdown of the recycle compressor at the
Toluene Disproportionation Unit was initiated by an instrumented
protective function," the refinery said in a statement to the Texas
Commission on Environmental Quality. "This action resulted in
elevated reactor bed temperatures, requiring a hydrogen sweep that
led to elevated flaring."
It said the emissions of some 968 pounds of sulfur dioxide began
Tuesday morning and ended Tuesday afternoon.
The 225,000-barrel-a-day Total Port Arthur refinery is 95 miles
east of Houston.
