UNILEVER APPOINTS MANFRED STACH
BUSINESS GROUP PRESIDENT AFRICA
Unilever announced today that Manfred Stach (56) will succeed
Henri Bonpun (65) as Business Group President, Africa. Dr.
Stach, who is currently Chairman Union Deutsche
Lebensmittelwerke GmbH and National Manager Germany, will be
responsible for all countries in continental Africa, except
North Africa, and Unilever's Plantations and Plant Science
Group. He will join the Africa Group in September this year.
Mr. Bonpun will retire in December of 1998 having completed 38
years service for Unilever.
Biographical Notes:
Manfred Stach joined Unilever in January 1970. He started as
Management Consultant and held various positions in financial
and accounting. In 1980 he joined Lever Brothers in the US as
Division Controller in Personal Products. He later became
Vice-President Financial Services and Vice-President Finance
of Lever Brothers and was apppointed Chief Financial Officer
of Chesebrough Pond's in 1987, shortly after Unilever acquired
this company. In 1988 he returned to Germany as Commercial
Director of Union Deutsche Lebensmittelwerke and became
Chairman in 1989. In 1992 he also became National Manager of
Unilever Germany.
Henri Bonpun joined Unilever in 1960. He spent most of his
early career at Astra Calve, France. In 1982 he moved to Cote
d'Ivoire, which was the start of a longstanding involvement in
Unilever's African Business. He served among others as
Managing Director of the United Africa Company and Chairman of
Unilever Cote d'Ivoire and was Chairman of Unilever South
Africa from 1993. In 1996 he was appointed Business Group
President, Africa.
