Second project in Texas in commercial operation in past month HOUSTON, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BP Wind Energy today announced full commercial operation of phase I of the Sherbino Wind Farm in Pecos County, west Texas. The first 150 megawatts (MW) of the project, which has a potential capacity of 750 MW, has been built through a 50-50 joint venture agreement with Padoma Wind Power LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc. Phase I of the project will generate enough carbon-free electricity to power approximately 45,000 average American homes. "Wind energy is one of America's most plentiful and important natural resources. The Sherbino wind farm will produce clean, renewable electricity for the next twenty years," adds Lukefahr. Construction of the 50-wind turbine facility located some 40 miles east of Fort Stockton in Texas moved into full construction in February 2008. Phase I utilizes 50 Vestas V-90 wind turbine generators, each with a rated capacity of 3 MW. BP will operate phase I of the project. The clean power produced from phase I of the project will be delivered into the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) transmission system and sold on the wholesale power market. This is the second wind project in Texas that BP has brought into commercial operation in the past month. The 60 MW Silver Star I Wind Farm located 80 miles southwest of the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area became operational on September 24, 2008. The project utilizes 24 Clipper Windpower 2.5 MW Liberty turbines. By the end of 2008, BP Wind Energy North America Inc. expects to generate over 1,000 MW of zero-carbon electricity from its wind projects. Note to Editors: Other BP wind projects in the U.S.: In operation: Cedar Creek: In January 2008, Babcock & Brown and BP announced full commercial operation of the Cedar Creek wind farm in Weld County, Colorado. The 300.5 MW wind-power facility utilizes 274 wind turbines and was delivered on time, on budget and without a single lost time incident during its construction. Power from the project will be sold under a long-term contract to the Public Service Company of Colorado, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy Inc. Edom Hills: The wind project commenced commercial operations in September 2008. Located in the San Gorgonio Pass, California the wind farm was a re-powering project of an existing 11 MW wind energy facility which saw 139 windmatics replaced with 8 Clipper Liberty 2.5 MW turbines increasing the power to 20 MW. There is an existing power purchase agreement with Southern California Edison. Under construction: Flat Ridge I wind farm located some 60 miles southwest of Wichita, Kansas is a 50-50 joint venture between BP Wind Energy and Westar Energy. Phase one of the project will have a capacity of 100 MW and is expected to be in commercial operation by year end. The Fowler Ridge wind farm located about 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis, the project will be built in multiple phases. The first phase will utilize 222 wind turbines - 182 Vestas V-82 1.65 MW turbines and 40 Clipper C-96 2.5 MW turbines - producing 400 MW of clean energy and is expected to be operational by the end of 2008. Dominion and BP are partners for 650 MW of the 750 MW site, with BP retaining sole ownership of 100 MW. Phase two is expected to generate an additional 350 MW, bringing the total project output to 750 MW. Construction of a second phase could begin as early as 2009. BP Alternative Energy / BP Wind Energy BP Alternative Energy, launched in November 2005, combines all of BP's interests in low and zero-carbon power generation: wind, solar, hydrogen power with carbon capture and storage, natural gas-fired power generation, biofuels for low carbon transport.
