The news was first reported by CNBC. I just listened to a 90-minute CLF press conference. LG did not offer any details, but it’s clear that a new buyout offer for X is coming.

 There always been a lot of talk on shorting stocks of this company to keep the share price down.

And then got involved promoting a plandemic, injuring employees across the board. Made public offerings, in cash bonuses. I believe, the acquisition may be a front to remove Concaves.

Nippon Steel urged the U.S. president to reflect on the steps the company has taken to address national-security concerns and the significant commitments it has made to grow U.S. Steel and protect American jobs. The company has pledged to invest $2.7 billion in U.S. Steel’s older plants.

I was commenting on the recent selloff—i.e. the 26% drop since 12/2/24. The bigger drop for 2024-to-date is, of course, due to weaker steel prices.

Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE:CLF), a vertically integrated steel mill operator, has seen its stock decline by 50% since the beginning of the year as compared to the 28% gain in the S&P 500 Index. Cleveland-Cliffs downward stock price movement is much sharper compared to that for its peers, including VALE (NYSE: VALE) which is down 42% year to date, ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT) which is down 13% year to date, United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) down 31% year to date, and Nucor Corp (NYSE: NUE) which is down 30% year to date. This fall has been primarily due to the adverse business conditions that the industry is going through.

Steel prices in the U.S. have witnessed a declining trend due to subdued demand in the domestic market with weak manufacturing activities. Globally, demand in the sector remains subdued due to oversupplies in the European market as well as high inventory levels in China. Cleveland Cliffs has a high exposure to the automotive sector, which continues to face challenges, leading to the company being more impacted than its competitors. We value CLF stock at about $14.50 per share, which is roughly 47% ahead of the current market price. At the current price of around $10 per share we believe CLF stock has room for improvement. Notably, the stock has moved down 70% from levels seen in March 2022.

Yes, CLF is a clear beneficiary from steel tariffs. My take on the recent selloff is that some investors think the Biden administration will approve Nippon’s takeover of US Steel despite having said they will oppose it. We’ll know in the next few days.

CLF seems to be falling off a cliff. Shouldn’t Trump’s pledge to slap tariffs on everything from anywhere, especially on steel, help boost the stock price?

Looking ahead, investors will just have to evaluate U.S. Steel on a stand-alone basis or look for domestic companies that could buy U.S. Steel. There is really only one: Cleveland-Cliffs. It bid $35 a share for U.S. Steel in August 2023, an offer that started this process
