Engie SA (ENGI.FR) said Thursday that it has won a contract to provide 100 electric buses to the public transportation system of the city of Santiago, Chile, by 2019.

The French energy company said that in addition to leasing the buses, it will be in charge of installing and maintaining the charging infrastructure for the vehicles, which will be powered by 100% renewable energy.

Chile will have 200 electric buses by 2019, which will make its electric bus fleet the second-largest after China's, Engie said. Santiago de Chile wants to develop a completely low-emission public transportation system with 6,000 electric buses running by 2040.
