URBN Urban Outfitters Q3 EPS Drops, Revenue Rises

04:27 PM EST, 11/21/2022 (MT Newswires) -- Urban Outfitters (URBN.NaE) reported late Monday Q3 earnings of $0.40 per diluted share, down from $0.89 a year earlier.

Analysts polled by Capital IQ expected $0.42.

Sales for the quarter ended Oct. 31 were $1.18 billion, up from $1.13 billion a year earlier.

Analysts surveyed by Capital IQ expected $1.16 billion.

JPMorgan checks in on mall retailers after taking in the ICR Conference presentations.

The firm lowers Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) to an Underweight rating from Neutral amid weak store traffic trends and calling compensation payout an incremental headwind.

Retailers over Christmas where punched in the gut this year.
No doubt $URBN sales figures will be equally disappointing.

The recent stimulus checks where a kick in the teeth with most Americans utilizing the money to stay afloat as opposed to stimulating the economy. :(

$URBN 4th quarter sales figures will add more red to the bottom line.

U.S. retail sales fell more than expected in November, likely weighed down by raging new Covid-19 infections and decreasing household income, adding to growing signs of a slowdown in the economy’s recovery from the pandemic recession.

The second straight monthly decline in retail sales reported by the Commerce Department on Wednesday could nudge Congress to agree on another fiscal stimulus package. News of the weak start to the holiday shopping season came as Federal Reserve officials were wrapping up a two-day policy meeting.

The U.S. central bank is expected to keep interest rates near zero and deliver a playbook for what might prompt the Fed to pump more money into the economy.

Retail sales dropped 1.1% last month, with receipts declining almost across the board. Data for October was revised down to show sales slipping 0.1% instead of rising 0.3% as previously reported, adding a sting to the report. October’s dip was the first since April, when stringent measures to control the first wave of coronavirus cases crippled the economy.

The plunge in sales last month was led by motor vehicles, with receipts at auto dealerships tumbling 1.7% after being unchanged in October. Receipts at clothing stores plummeted 6.8%. Consumers also cut back on eating and drinking out. Sales at restaurants and bars dropped 4.0%.

Sales at electronics and appliance stores fell 3.5% and receipts at furniture stores declined 1.1%. There were also decreases in sales at sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores. But receipts at food and beverage stores rose as did those at building material stores.

Online and mail-order retail sales rose a modest 0.2%.

Just losing dollars in 2020 nothing to cheer about.

For the nine months ended October 31, 2020, net loss was $27 million and loss per diluted share was $0.28. :(

Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) reports comparable retail segment sales fell 13% in Q2 vs. -28% consensus. By brand, comparable retail segment net sales increased 11% at Free People and decreased 8% at Urban Outfitters and 25% at the Anthropologie Group. Total retail segment sales were down 14% and wholesale segment sales were off 51%.
Gross margin was 29.6% of sales vs. 32.8% a year ago and the consensus mark of 21.3%. Operating margin was 8.6% of sales vs. 8.1% a year ago.

URBN’s Q2 Profits Rebound Sharply

August 25 2020 GlobeNewswire Inc.

Urban Outfitters, Inc. $URBN, a leading lifestyle products and services company which operates a portfolio of global consumer brands comprised of the Anthropologie, BHLDN, Free People, Terrain, Urban Outfitters, Nuuly and Menus & Venues brands, today announced net income of $34 million and earnings per diluted share of $0.35 for the three months ended July 31, 2020. For the six months ended July 31, 2020, net loss was $104 million and loss per diluted share was $1.06.

Total Company net sales for the three months ended July 31, 2020, decreased 16.5% over the same period last year to $803 million. Comparable Retail segment net sales decreased 13%, driven by negative retail store sales due to stores being closed for part of the quarter and lower store productivity once opened, partially offset by strong double-digit growth in the digital channel. By brand, comparable Retail segment net sales increased 11% at Free People and decreased 8% at Urban Outfitters and 25% at the Anthropologie Group. Total Retail segment net sales decreased 14%. Wholesale segment net sales decreased 51%.

today if the news isn't as good as expected it gets brutal...

Added 12% to my URBN holding this AM at $33.86. I had let 10% of the position go at $41.95 and an additional 5% of remaining shares go at $45 back in early March. So this buy helped rebuild share inventory.



The brutal sell off this AM doesn't match the news very well. The company reported profits, but not as good as outsiders' expectations. The drop in price this AM looked more like they should have reported a loss than a miss.

URBN has tracked up nicely since I last added shares back in November.



At the November low the share price was off 21.8% from where I started last March but the account (including the cash) was off just 12.8%. Overall the account is up 15% from where it started at the end of March, 2014.

That's reasonable performance considering the heavy cash insurance the account is carrying.

URBN is my Earnings play for Mar 9th, after mkt.
