More than 40 activities planned for May 16 to May 21

ATLANTA - May 12, 2016 - AGL Resources and its family of companies will continue their tradition of strengthening communities during the third annual Volunteer Week, which runs May 16 to May 21. Employees throughout the company's service territories will celebrate their year-round commitments to volunteerism in support of a core company value, Generosity of Spirit.

More than 900 employees, retirees, community partners, and their families and friends will concentrate their energy on more than 40 projects that demonstrate the ongoing role they play in shaping the community and leaving a lasting impact for current and future generations.

"We take seriously our responsibility to fuel the daily lives of more than 4.5 million customers each day," said Melanie Platt, AGL Resources executive vice president and chief people officer. "Each year during the third week of May, we are proud to put that commitment on full display. Volunteer Week celebrates our commitment to volunteerism and highlights our desire to build and sustain the vibrant communities where our customers and employees live and work."

The projects, which will be completed in 10 states across the footprint and which focus on environmental education and sustainability, community enrichment and energy efficiency, include beautifying natural trails and sprucing up grounds, planting community gardens and native plants, organizing food pantries and delivering meals to seniors.

Some of this year's highlighted projects include the following:

  • AGL Resources and Atlanta Gas Light continue their longstanding support of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. Employees will dust off their tool belts to put the finishing touches on a home for the company's 26th Habitat build. Atlanta Habitat for Humanity partners with working families and communities to build affordable, green, quality homes and to provide support services that promote successful home purchase and ownership.
  • Chattanooga Gas employees will help clean up a park in Chattanooga managed by Tennessee River Gorge Trust, a land conservation nonprofit organization.
  •  Elizabethtown Gas will strengthen its relationship with Groundwork Elizabeth by pedaling 15 miles through the streets of Elizabeth, N.J. neighborhoods on May 22 in support of the organization's community enrichment initiatives.
  • Nicor Gas and Pivotal Home Solutions will mark the 20thanniversary of Nicor Gas' Volunteer Day on May 21 by performing more than 25 service projects benefiting 18 northern Illinois communities.
  • Sequent Energy Management will culminate its year-round support of students at Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston by lending support at graduation activities on May 16. During the school year, employees donate their time to a number of projects with students, including a mentoring program.
  • Virginia Natural Gas employees will serve meals at the men's shelter and will sort and organize food in the warehouse at the Union Mission in Norfolk, an organization that provides shelter and care to thousands of people in South Hampton Roads.
