Prime Focus Broadcast VFX team wins Emmy award

London-based Broadcast specialists awarded for work on 'World War II From Space'

London: 7(th) October 2013

The Broadcast VFX team of Prime Focus London plc ("Prime Focus") is delighted to announce that The History Channel's World War II From Space has won an Emmy award for 'Outstanding Graphic Design and Art Direction'.

Managing Director for VFX, Parvinder Bhatia commented; "It is an extremely proud moment for the whole team at Broadcast VFX, especially myself and Creative Director, Simon Clarke. This is the fruition of the hard work and effort of the last six years, in developing this new stream of business within the Prime Focus family."

Creative Director Simon Clarke accepted the award, saying, "It is a very uplifting moment for me to receive this award, which I accept on behalf of the whole team. This wouldn't have happened without the passion, sheer grit and determination of all the individuals involved."

World War II from Space, directed by Simon George and produced by October Films, covers the key political events and battles of World War II, making extensive use of today's creative technology to deliver the information in a way that will seize the attention of modern audiences.

Executive Producer, Adam Bullmore said; "None of this would have been possible without Prime Focus and its unprecedented support of a very exciting but quite possibly mad idea unleashed by Matt Robins and myself. So our profoundest thanks go to Parvinder, Will and Simon for getting the whole PF team to back every part of Simon George's and October's vision."

Led by Simon Clarke, VFX supervisor Graham Stott and motion graphics director Hazel Baird supervised the Prime Focus Broadcast VFX team, devising and creating visually exciting ways to deliver 78 minutes of CG for the 90 minute programme.

The sequences included the creation of photoreal period satellite images; map imaging; technical overlay lenses that deliver statistics to an onscreen HUD; 3D-cross sections and explosions of mechanical schematics; and 2.5D archive photography compositing - as well as incredibly immersive full CG battle sequences.

"The 'tech lenses' we developed are a great example of how this series has evolved the genre of World War II documentary programming," said Simon Clarke. "They act to give the audience a sort of 'top trumps' view of vehicles and technology. For example, we take a look at why the Mitsubishi Zero, used in the attack on Pearl Harbor, was so strong: we start by seeing the finished model, before it strips back to a blueprint, rotates and splits away the individual parts to reveal the intricacies of its internal mechanisms. Modern touches like this really help put the viewer in the moment."

Director Simon George concluded; "This was a very intricate collaborative process, but hugely rewarding. The result was a truly incredible film that is now being recognised both at the major award ceremonies as well as in DVD sales. I think we are all very proud of what we accomplished."
