University to Establish Scholarships SMITHFIELD, Va., Nov. 1
/PRNewswire/ -- The Smithfield-Luter Foundation announced today
that it has contributed $25,000 to Johnson & Wales University
to establish a scholarship fund for Smithfield Foods, Inc.
employees' children and grandchildren. The Smithfield-Luter
Foundation will contribute $25,000 annually to the university for
the next three years, totaling $100,000 over a four-year period.
Founded in 2001 by Smithfield Foods chairman and chief executive
officer Joseph W. Luter, III, the Smithfield-Luter Foundation is a
non-profit organization, that provides scholarships for the
dependent children and grandchildren of full-time or retired
employees of the Smithfield Foods, Inc. family of companies. The
amount of each scholarship is determined by the university's
financial aid office and does not exceed the cost of tuition,
course-related fees, books, supplies and equipment for the student.
"The Smithfield-Luter Foundation is proud to offer Smithfield Foods
employees' family members the opportunity to attend Johnson &
Wales, a world- class culinary institution," said Mr. Luter, who is
chairman of the foundation. "Johnson & Wales' reputation for
being the premier culinary institute in the country makes it an
ideal choice for the Smithfield-Luter Foundation. "This ties in
perfectly with Smithfield's long-time support of the culinary arts,
such as our sponsorship of the James Beard Foundation. Also, the
Johnson & Wales campuses are near several of our company's
facilities and are in our major markets." Known as America's Career
University(R), Johnson and Wales offers it 15,000-plus students the
opportunity to pursue a career education in business, hospitality,
culinary arts, or technology. Johnson & Wales' five domestic
campuses are located in Providence, Rhode Island; Charleston, South
Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; North Miami, Florida; and Denver,
Colorado. The Charlotte, North Carolina campus opened in September.
"The university is very pleased to be entering into a partnership
with the Smithfield-Luter Foundation in the development of young
men and women, many who will be entering the foodservice industry
upon graduation," said Vincent Saele, vice president of Johnson
& Wales University. "Johnson & Wales is pleased to be
selected as one of the few universities in the United States to
participate in this scholarship program. With annualized sales of
$10 billion, Smithfield Foods is the leading processor and marketer
of fresh pork and processed meats in the United States, as well as
the largest producer of hogs. For more information please visit
