Telecom equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Networks said Monday it has signed a contract to provide femtocell equipment to U.S.-based operator Mosaic Telecom, with deployment starting in the third quarter.

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens will provide equipment including a 3G femto gateway, operation and maintenance server, and provisioning manager, while U.S.-based equipment vendor Airvana Inc. will provide third-generation, or 3G, high-speed packet access femtocells.

Femtocells are small base stations that provide users with a mobile broadband access point to increase network coverage.

"Femtocells ensure subscribers enjoy the best indoor mobile voice, video and data services, and help offload traffic from the broader 3G network," said Rick Vergin, chief executive officer of Mosaic Telecom.

"We... expect this implementation to drive data traffic growth in the network, leading to increased average revenue per user," he added.

Nokia Siemens Networks is a joint venture between Finland's Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Germany's Siemens AG (SI).
