"Mercury Computer Systems broke out deep within its consolidation on April 19. By May 2 it had moved as high as 55.50, rounding out a 14 week base. The stock then pulled back to its pivot point of 44.38 before resuming its assent. It finished Firday 4% short of its high.

The current consolidation is part of a larger base begun in March of last year. Mercury has repeatedly run into resistance around 54.50. Watch for it to move past its new pivot point at 55.63.

Earnings growth slowed last spring and summer. It's since rebounded, with profit rising 15% in the Dec. fiscal second quarter adn 31% in the third quarter. June fourth-quarter profit is expected to climb 85%.

In all, the seven analysts surveyed by First Call predict earnings will rise 18% in fiscal 2001 compared with a 75% increase in 2000.

Sales growth has been on the upswing the last two quarters, rising from 10% to 22% to 45%."

Mercury Computer Systems Selected by Air Force Research Laboratory for Automatic Target Recognition Research

CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2001--

Mercury Delivers Market's Most Advanced, Scalable, Embedded Systems

to the Department of Defense's High Performance Computing

Modernization Program

Photo available: http://www.mc.com/pressroom/imagelibrary/powerstream/index.html

Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRCY), a leading provider of embedded real-time digital signal and image processing systems, announced today that it has been selected by the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio to supply two of the recently announced RACE++(TM) PowerStream(TM) 510 systems as part of the Department of Defense's (DoD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program. Among the most powerful signal processing systems in the world, the PowerStream 510 systems will be used to advance target recognition research by decreasing the time from development to deployment of embedded applications. The contract is valued at $2.2 million.

"Developing algorithms for automated target recognition is of critical importance to the mission of the DoD," said Gregory Powers, Director of the Air Force Research Laboratory/SN Distributed Center. "Mercury's scalable, embedded systems equip us with the computing power necessary to fully test algorithms in a deployable multiprocessor system, ultimately benefiting the warfighter by recognizing and classifying targets."

Within the DoD's High Performance Computing Modernization Program, the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate will use Mercury's high-performance, real-time signal processing systems to develop the algorithms for recognizing unique target characteristics. Fusing the information from radio frequency and electro-optical sensors will improve the reliability of the target and threat identification process, while providing improved awareness of the situation within the battlespace.

Mercury's PowerStream 510 systems represent the most advanced, scalable, embedded systems in the market. A single PowerStream 510 system can scale up to 180 "G4" processors in a single chassis, providing peak performance of .5 teraFLOPS of computing power. With 8.5 gigabytes per second of bisection communication bandwidth, which is more than four times that available for standard RACE++ VME systems, the PowerStream 510 is ideal for the most demanding radar and signals intelligence applications.

"Mercury Computer Systems enables the DoD to maintain its leadership position at the forefront of technology," said Vince Mancuso, vice president and general manager of Mercury's Government Electronics Group. "Our systems are playing a vital role in automatic target recognition research - analysis that used to take hours to calculate can be performed by Mercury's systems in minutes. Because our systems are often used in forward deployment with our armed forces, critical information will be available for the warfighter within the theater of operations. In addition, we're improving time to market, helping the DoD reduce costs and providing Mercury with an expanded market opportunity in defense applications."

Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY), a leading provider of embedded real-time digital signal and image processing systems, today announced its new RACE++(tm) Series PowerStream(tm) 510 multicomputing system. Designed as the second generation of multiported RACE(r) systems, the new PowerStream combines the highest intra-system communication bandwidth available with high computational density in a single, deployable, embedded multicomputer system. The industry-leading, high-speed interprocessor communications capability is key to obtaining maximum delivered performance for applications such as high-end radar and signals intelligence.

Mercury has already shipped several of the PowerStream systems to customers for use in high-end defense signal and image processing applications. Two of those systems represent design wins that significantly increase the acceptance of Mercury's systems in the defense electronics market for shipboard radar. The PowerStream system is also expected to enhance Mercury's efforts in mobile groundstations for image intelligence and high-end commercial applications such as automated inspection systems.

With the continuing advances in processor speeds, moving data to the processors in multiprocessor systems becomes the primary barrier to increased system performance. Mercury's new PowerStream system solves this problem by providing eight RACE++ ports per each of the ten 9U boards, boosting bisection bandwidth to more than 8 gigabytes per second, which is quadruple the performance of standard RACE++ VME systems and of Mercury's RACE Series MultiPort(tm) 410, the predecessor to the PowerStream system.

"Our customers have increasingly requested a complete signal processing subsystem, and the PowerStream model has been designed from the ground up as a complete system to meet that need," said Vince Mancuso, vice president and general manager, Government Electronics Group, Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. "To balance the increased processing power of the latest PowerPC(tm) processor, more applications now require the high-end interprocessor communications we provide in our PowerStream systems. We're extremely pleased with the early market acceptance of these new systems."

"We selected PowerStream as a fully integrated, deployable system for our airborne surveillance flight systems," commented Bill Hoover, Airborne Early Warning program manager at Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Electronics Sensors and Systems Sector. "By developing on a deployable system, we expect to save valuable time during our integration and test phase."

"The PowerStream has a significant advantage in system performance per cubic foot, occupying half of a standard computer rack compared to high-performance UNIX systems that typically occupy 5 to 10 racks," continued Mr. Mancuso. "This advantage can have a strategic impact in terms of logistics and costs when deployed in mobile military systems. For example, smaller mobile groundstations may now be deployed in smaller vehicles, which in turn may be transported on smaller aircraft such as a C-130 instead of a C-5A."

Mercury's RACE++ Series PowerStream 510 systems are designed and manufactured for deployment in mission-critical applications. A single system is scalable to 180 PowerPC "G4" microprocessors, providing over 500 GFLOPs of processing performance in a single chassis. This PowerStream performance represents an increase by a factor of 10 over the first-generation RACE Series MultiPort 410 system. Additional AltiVec(TM) processors, custom processors, input/output devices and other components can be installed in the PowerStream model's ten 6U VME slots, several of which also provide integration with the RACE++ backplane.

The power and cooling modules of the PowerStream system are designed specifically to handle this extreme processing and communications density. RACE++ Series PowerStream 510 systems include vital serviceability features such as hot-swappable N+1 redundant power supplies, easy access to blower and peripherals, processor board slot keying, and chassis diagnostic status lights for temperature, humidity, and other key parameters.

Additional detailed information about the PowerStream systems is available on Mercury's web site at http://www.mc.com/data-sheets/2001/powerstream.pdf. Photos are available at http://www.mc.com/pressroom/imagelibrary/powerstream/index.html.

Mercury Computer Systems Reports 45% Growth in Revenues, 30% Rise in Net Income in Third Quarter
Record Quarterly Revenues of $47 Million and EPS of $0.34 Continue Company's Strong Financial Performance
CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2001-- Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRCY - news), a leading provider of embedded real-time digital signal and image processing systems, today reported results for the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal year 2001, ended March 31, 2001.

Revenues for the third quarter were $47.0 million, a 45% increase over the $32.4 million in revenue for the third quarter of the prior fiscal year. Net income for the quarter was $7.9 million, a 30% increase over the $6.1 million in net income in the year-ago quarter, representing 41 consecutive quarters of profitable company performance. Earnings per common share (diluted) was $0.34, a 31% year-to-year growth over the EPS of $0.26 reported in the prior-year quarter.

Revenues for the nine months ended March 31, 2001 were $131.7 million, a 25% increase over the $105.6 million in revenue reported for the nine months ended March 31, 2000. Net income for the nine months was $22.0 million, representing 9% growth over the $20.2 million in net income reported for the first nine months of the prior fiscal year. Earnings per common share (diluted) for the nine months was $0.95, a 7% increase over the $0.89 EPS reported for the nine-month period ended March 31, 2000.

``We are pleased to report another very strong quarter of performance with growth in revenue, earnings and cash generation,'' said Jay Bertelli, president and CEO of Mercury Computer Systems. ``We saw year-to-year growth in all segments of our business, led by our defense electronics group, where revenues grew 55% year-over-year. Medical diagnostic imaging revenues grew 36% year-over-year, and our OEM solutions group revenues grew 17% compared to the previous year's quarter. We delivered record quarterly performance while continuing to make the aggressive investments necessary to position ourselves for strong future growth in new application markets.''

Third Quarter Highlights

In the defense electronics sector, revenues for the third quarter were $31.4 million representing 67% of the total revenues for the quarter. The third quarter was a very strong bookings quarter in our worldwide defense business. Overall Mercury achieved 15 new program wins, with the international defense team once again showing significant success accounting for five of those wins. If each of these new programs were to go to full deployment, they collectively represent a five-year potential in excess of $50 million in total sales.

Mercury's worldwide medical diagnostic imaging revenues for the quarter were $10.3 million, 22% of the total revenues for the quarter. This segment continues to grow above plan for the year as the company's medical OEMs experience better-than-forecasted shipments in essentially all modalities.

The OEM solutions business grew to $5.3 million representing 11% of the company's total revenue for the quarter. Growth in this segment has come primarily in semiconductor imaging applications, including lithography and wafer inspection and testing applications. The company continues to make progress in developing new business opportunities as the semiconductor industry migrates to .13 micron and smaller design rules. The new generation of systems designed for these tiny geometries requires tremendous image-processing capability for which Mercury's scalable, ultimate performance architecture is ideally suited.

In the wireless communications market, the business unit continues to make progress in positioning the company to capitalize on this tremendous future market potential. Development work has continued on the prototype communications computer being used to demonstrate Mercury's capabilities to potential customers. The company is focusing on understanding general industry trends as the adoption rate of 3G appears to be shifting out. This trend will have no impact on Mercury's fiscal 2002 revenue growth since the company had anticipated FY02 being a development year.

Business Outlook

In looking ahead to the rest of the year, Mercury's CFO, G. Mead Wyman, said, ``Fiscal 2001 remains on track to produce another year of record financial performance. We are intently aware of the continued economic slowdown reflected in the worldwide markets and the reality that our customers could see some unanticipated impact to their business in future quarters. While optimistic that we will achieve our plan for the year, it is only prudent we remain cautious in our outlook for the remaining quarter of 2001 and the next few quarters as we work our way through this challenging period of economic uncertainty.

``Our guidance for financial performance in the fourth quarter fiscal 2001 continues to be for revenues of approximately $49 million and EPS of approximately $0.36. The company's guidance for fiscal 2002 is to anticipate revenues to be in the range of $215 million to $230 million, and EPS to be in the range of $1.55 to $1.60. During the fourth quarter the company will be completing its annual planning process. We will provide more specific guidance for fiscal 2002 with our fourth-quarter 2001 earnings report,'' concluded Mr. Wyman.
