FARMINGTON, Conn., July 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On the 113th
anniversary of Dr. Willis H.
Carrier's invention of modern air conditioning, Carrier will
celebrate another milestone: 175 million metric tons of avoided
greenhouse gas emissions since 2000 as a result of the installation
of high-efficiency Carrier systems. This environmental achievement
will be captured by the Carrier CO2NSERVATION Meter, which
calculates avoided greenhouse gas emissions as a result of the
installation of Carrier air-conditioning, heating and refrigeration
systems around the world. Carrier, the world's leader in high
technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions,
is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of
United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
Dr. Carrier launched his world-changing invention on
July 17, 1902 at Sackett &
Wilhelms Lithography and Printing Company in Brooklyn, New York. Designed to provide
humidity control, Carrier's air conditioning system improved
printing processes during the hot summer months. Since its launch,
modern air conditioning has changed the indoor environment by
creating productive, comfortable and safe climates to live and work
in. Carrier continues to create products that improve quality of
life while further enhancing energy efficiency and reducing
environmental impact.
To highlight the environmental sustainability of Carrier's
energy-efficient products, Carrier introduced its CO2NSERVATION
Meter in 2010. The meter calculates avoided greenhouse gas
emissions of high-efficiency products from Carrier's global
portfolio using sales data to estimate the total products in use,
and displays the total metric tons of greenhouse gases avoided or
saved on a rolling meter. Since 2000, the avoidance of greenhouse
gas emissions by Carrier products equates to nearly 37 million
passenger vehicles removed from the road for one year or savings
from eliminating electricity use from nearly 24 million homes for
one year.
"As a sustainability leader, Willis
Carrier invented precise cooling processes that enabled
countless industries to avoid waste and preserve resources for
future generations," said John
Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Building &
Industrial Systems. "More than 100 years later, we honor his legacy
with this fitting milestone on the Carrier CO2NSERVATION Meter,
which demonstrates the power of choosing energy-efficient systems.
We will continue to pioneer products that make our world a better
place to live today and for generations to come."
