SECTION 198 COMPANIES ACT 1985 - DISCLOSURE OF INTEREST IN SHARES

British Steel plc has today received notification from Deutsche Bank AG that,
at 25 August 1999, Deutsche Bank AG had interests in 101,934,505 ordinary
shares of 50p representing approximately 5.1% of British Steel's issued
capital. These interests are under the management of Deutsche Bank AG and its
subsidiaries on behalf of clients.
