                            Chairman's AGM Statement


The following is the text of the statement being made at the Annual General
Meeting today by Michael Windsor, Chairman:

"At the time of the preliminary results in June we announced that trading in
the current year had started well and the Group was ahead of budget.  I am
pleased to report that this trend has continued, underpinned by a recovery in
our Far Eastern markets and a return to more normal volumes in our automotive
business. 

"We are also beginning to see the benefits of the steps taken during the
1998/99 financial year to restructure the cost base of the business.
 
"With signs of recovery in our major markets the Board believes that the Group
is now back on track and we remain confident of a significantly improved
performance for the year as a whole."
