In Celebration of National Lazy Day on August
10, La-Z-Boy reveals survey findings that show a national yearning
for more lazy moments to improve their well-being.
La-Z-Boy, the pioneer of truly comfortable furniture for nearly
a century, knows the joy of relaxing and savoring those “feet-up
moments” better than anyone. Just in time for National Lazy Day on
Saturday, Aug. 10, La-Z-Boy is sharing the results of a national
survey that reveals how Americans truly feel about indulging in
moments of laziness.
At a time when media coverage and social media algorithms often
fixate on hyper-productivity and hustle culture, many Americans
maintain positive attitudes toward lazy moments. Here are some of
the key findings from a survey of 2,090 Americans 18 and older
conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of La-Z-Boy from June
20-24:
- Laziness is self-care: Nearly 9 in 10 Americans (89%)
recognize that being lazy can be a form of self-care.
- Mental health benefits of laziness: Nearly all Americans
(98%) believe there are benefits to taking time to be lazy, with
stress reduction (80%) and improved mental health (78%) being the
top perceived benefits.
- Desire for more lazy moments: Nearly three-quarters of
Americans (74%) express a desire for more lazy moments to relax and
take a moment for themselves.
- The joy of missing out (JOMO) is at an all-time high: An
overwhelming 82% of Americans prefer staying home and relaxing on
the weekends over going out more now than they have in the past,
indicating a significant shift towards prioritizing relaxation in
recent years.
Ahead of National Lazy Day, La-Z-Boy also is partnering with
psychiatrist and author of Practical Optimism: The Art, Science and
Practice of Exceptional Wellbeing, Dr. Sue Varma to share the
survey results and further encourage people to make laziness a part
of their self-care regimen.
"Growing up, many of us were taught that our worth is tied to
hard work, leaving us to navigate the prioritization of rest and
relaxation on our own," Dr. Varma said. "As a result, we often feel
guilty when we take time to kick back. However, our self-worth
exists simply because we do, and it is scientifically proven that
rest is essential for longevity, productivity, and overall
wellness. Whether it's a meditation pillow on the floor or the
comfort of your favorite recliner, I recommend creating dedicated
spaces in our homes — or 'zen dens,' as I like to call them — that
allow us to slip into moments of leisure and relaxation
guilt-free."
Now through Monday, Aug. 19, La-Z-Boy is empowering more people
to create ideal spaces at home to optimize their laziness with
special promotional offers at participating locations. Select
stores will host in-store giveaways during the promotion, including
the chance to enter to win a $10,000 La-Z-Boy shopping spree.

“We are excited to bring our ‘Long Live the Lazy’ platform into
this year’s National Lazy Day celebration, recognizing that modern
life’s demands can be utterly exhausting,” said Christy Hoskins,
Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, La-Z-Boy. “This day
reminds us of the importance of taking a break, and La-Z-Boy
furniture offers the perfect comfort and rest needed to recharge.
As we continue to evolve, our commitment remains steadfast in
creating the most comfortable furniture so everyone can savor their
well-deserved lazy moments.”

Survey Method:
This survey was conducted online within the United States by The
Harris Poll on behalf of La-Z-Boy from June 20-24, 2024
among 2,090 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. The sampling precision
of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible
interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within +/-
2.5 percentage points using a 95% confidence level. For complete
