A notice was received from Baring Asset Management Group advising that, at close
of business 6 January 1998, they held for discretionary and advisory clients a
total of 6,044,763 ordinary shares in Baring Stratton Investment Trust plc
representing 47.88% of the issued share capital.

This disclosure was made in accordance with Section 199(2) (b) of the Companies
Act 1995. A holding of this order of magnitude has been held on behalf of
clients by Baring Asset Management Group for a number of years but had
inadvertently not been disclosed to the Company.

The Baring Asset Management Group holding includes the following beneficial
holdings of 3% or more in the issued share capital of the Company which had
previously been notified:
