                     Appointment of Non-Executive Chairman

Yorkshire Group plc ("the Company") announces the appointment of Patrick A
Barrett OBE as non-executive chairman with effect from 18 March, 2002. He will
take over from Philip Howard, the Company's senior non-executive director who
has been acting as non-executive chairman since October, 2001.

Pat Barrett (64), has gained extensive international experience during the
course of his business career and most recently was chief executive of the
Jefferson Smurfit Group's European operations until 2000.

As well as retaining an involvement in the Jefferson Smurfit Group, in a
non-executive capacity, Pat Barrett also holds non-executive chairmanships in
East Surrey Holdings PLC, Pura plc and Devro plc.
