Banco Santander SA said Wednesday that it has appointed Deutsche Bank AG's Christiana Riley as its next regional head for North America.

The Spanish bank said Ms. Riley will be responsible for all its businesses in the U.S. and Mexico and report to the group's Chief Executive Hector Grisi, who was Santander's North America head until he was appointed to his current role on Jan. 1.

Ms. Riley will join Santander at the beginning of October, subject to regulatory approval, the bank said.

Deutsche Bank earlier said Ms. Riley, who most recently led the bank's operations in the Americas, would leave next month to pursue an outside opportunity.
