USEPA Ethanol Blending Update
GTL Resources PLC (AIM: GTL), the US based bio-refining company,
with a 110 million gallon per annum ethanol plant in Illinois, is
pleased to comment on the US Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA) 21January 2011 announcement allowing 15% ethanol blending
(E15), an increase from 10%, in vehicles manufactured between 2001
and 2006.
This follows the October 2010 announcement allowing E15 blending
in vehicles manufactured since 2007. Now, vehicles that account for
approximately two-thirds of gasoline consumed in the US are
approved for E15 blending.
USEPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson said, "Recently completed
testing and data analysis show that E15 does not harm emissions
control equipment in newer cars and light trucks. Wherever sound
science and the law support steps to allow more home-grown fuels in
America's vehicles, this administration takes those steps."
Richard Ruebe, GTL's CEO, commented, "We are delighted with the
USEPA formally announcing approval for up to 15% ethanol blends in
vehicles representing a significant majority of the miles driven in
the US. The US Department of Energy has now completed long term
durability and emissions testing on vehicles manufactured since
2001. The USEPA has reviewed these extensive tests, and has
determined that E15 blending does not negatively impact tailpipe
emissions, engine performance, or engine durability in newer cars
and light trucks.
The USEPA's announcement is clearly good news for US based
ethanol producers as it will now allow 50% more ethanol to be
consumed in vehicles manufactured since 2001. These recent rulings
will have a positive impact on the supply/demand dynamics of our
industry and will eventually lead to increased future ethanol
demand as gas station retailers gradually make the required changes
in their tank and dispensing infrastructure to accommodate 15%
ethanol blending.
We commend the USEPA for their continued, fact based support of
the ethanol industry and take today's announcement as further
endorsement of the significant long term benefits ethanol will have
in the US transportation fuels market. GTL produces 110 million
gallons of ethanol per year and the GTL management team feels
confident that we will be well placed to benefit over the long term
from increasing demand in the ethanol industry."
