Innovative Program Was the First to Bring Hotel-Style Dining
Service to a Healthcare Setting GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 2
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sodexho, Inc. (NYSE:SDX), the nation's
leading provider of food and facilities management and the pioneer
of room service-style service in hospitals, announced today the At
Your Request - Room Service Dining(R) program has reached the 250-
location mark across North America. At Your Request is a program
that allows patients to have 'what they want, when they want it' by
ordering personalized meals from a full scale, restaurant-style
menu of dining options that adhere to physician-established
nutritional guidelines. All the patient has to do is pick up the
phone by their bed and they are connected with someone that will
take their order and arrange for the delivery of the meal. This
service can be available around the clock and is designed to not be
confined to pre-set dining hours. "At Your Request is the kind of
program that shows the spirit of innovation that has made Sodexho
the leading provider of food and facilities management in the
healthcare industry," said Shelley Kalfas, senior vice president,
Food and Nutrition Brand Management for Sodexho, Inc.'s Health Care
Services Division. "We saw a way for our dining services to both
improve the patient's experience and improve the client's bottom
line -- we couldn't go wrong with that combination." The program
was developed at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 1996 and
rolled out as a national program by Sodexho in 1998. Today
hospitals around the country serve 120,000 meals a day through the
program. This patient- focused approach to hospital dining not only
improves the overall experience for the patient, but it also helps
curtail hospital food costs by only serving patients what they want
during a meal, thus cutting down on wasted food. Over 35 more
locations will start using the program by the end of the year
including large hospitals like Yale-New Haven Hospital in New
Haven, CT. "The fact that larger hospitals like Yale-New Haven
Hospital are starting to use this program is a real testament to
how far this program has developed and how much it has been refined
-- there used to be a limit to the size and complexity of hospital
that could benefit from room service," added Kalfas. Sodexho, Inc.
