Local police has started operations in the abandoned village to force out environmental activists protesting against the expansion of the coal mine. Under an agreement signed by RWE with the federal government, Lutzerath is set to be demolished to expand the Garzweiler lignite mine as part of an effort to reduce gas consumption amid the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.
