LOS ANGELES, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
The Louisiana Organ Procurement Organization (LOPA) is saving
more lives by recovering more hearts and organs after having
several of its transplant coordinators trained in administering
echocardiogram exams. LOPA had coordinators trained in
echocardiography through a unique course delivered by CompuMed,
Inc. and West Coast Ultrasound Institute (WCUI). The Basic
Echocardiography for the Transplant Coordinator course is one of
the only ultrasound courses in the country that is customized to
the specific needs of the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO)
community. By training its transplant coordinators in
echocardiography, LOPA is increasing its organ yield through its
ability to administer serial echocardiogram exams twenty-four hours
a day and seven days a week on demand.

"Recently, we recovered a heart which would have been impossible
to recover using our old model. After attending the CompuMed/WCUI
course, one of our coordinators, Bo
Credeur, was able to perform an echo that resulted in a
transplanted heart. Without having this skillset in-house, we would
not even have pursued this case because the chances of recovery
were very slim due to the case profile and because the hospital
sonographer was unavailable. Our early success has already
justified the investment we have made in the course and equipment
and we are now in the process of expanding this initiative," said
Joey Boudreaux, LOPA's Chief
Clinical Officer.
"Joey Boudreaux and the LOPA team
are trailblazers in revolutionizing the OPO industry to save more
lives. We're humbled that CompuMed's Enterprise OPO Solution is
playing a role in their success," said W.
Scott Rombach, CompuMed's President and CEO.
