BOISE, Idaho and BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Rust Constructors, a Washington Group International (NASDAQ:WGII)
subsidiary, has been named one of America's 10 safest companies by
Occupational Hazards, a leading magazine of safety, health, and
loss prevention. It marks the third consecutive year that
Washington Group or one of its subsidiaries has been recognized by
the magazine for its industry-leading safety record, programs and
commitment to providing a safe workplace for employees. Rust
Constructors, headquartered in Birmingham, is a full-service merit
shop construction and maintenance company that provides
construction, construction management, construction consulting, and
plant services, including maintenance and small capital project
support. "From their top executives all the way down to the factory
floor, the 10 companies selected to be 2006 America's Safest
Companies just plain 'get it,'" Occupational Hazards Editor Sandy
Smith said. "They get the importance of safety committees,
training, job-hazard analyses, audits, stop-work authority and
management visibility. And they get that safety is essential to
business success." "Safety is a driving force at Rust Constructors,
as it is throughout Washington Group International, and we have
developed a culture that makes the safety of every one of our
employees the highest priority every day. We're honored by this
external recognition of our employees' performance and especially
pleased to be selected three years in a row," said Stephen G.
Hanks, president and chief executive officer of Washington Group
International. "Rust started having projects go one million work
hours without a lost-time injury in the mid-1980s, and then we
evolved into going one million hours without a recordable injury,"
said Chris Phillips, Rust president and chief operating officer.
"We now focus even more proactively on preventing the acts and
conditions that have the potential to lead to an injury, rather
than just preventing injuries. We've completed more than three
years without a lost-time injury." Washington Group International
was recognized as a "safest company" in 2004, and its subsidiary,
Washington Savannah River Company, was selected in 2005. Washington
Group International (NASDAQ:WGII) provides the talent, innovation,
and proven performance to deliver integrated engineering,
construction, and management solutions for businesses and
governments worldwide. Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, with more
than $3 billion in annual revenue, the company has approximately
24,000 people at work around the world providing solutions in
power, environmental management, defense, oil and gas processing,
