Nanya Technology Corp. (2408.TW) isn't ruling out the possibility of acquiring Winbond Electronics Corp. (2344.TW), Nanya spokesman Pei Lin Pai said Wednesday, adding the two chip makers aren't in talks.

The comment came after Economic Daily News reported Wednesday that Nanya, its U.S. partner Micron Technology Inc. (MU) and their joint-venture Inotera Memories Inc. (3474.TW) may consider jointly acquiring Winbond to receive investment from the Taiwan government.

"We are not ruling out the acquisition possibility, but we don't have such a plan now," Pai said.

Officials at Inotera and Micron weren't immediately available for comment.

Winbond spokesman Wilson Wen said the company hasn't been approached by the Nanya group regarding a takeover, but it is open to the takeover.

The Taiwan government said Tuesday the island's memory-chip makers can apply for government investment if they meet certain criteria, including consolidating through mergers and acquisitions.
